Although it can seem like our priorities and goals change a lot over time, one spiritual leader wanted to find out what older people thought looking back over the span of their lives. Success or other kinds of material achievement didn’t register as much as you might think. They especially valued their personal relationships, which caused them both the most pain and gave them their biggest feelings of accomplishment.
What the 90-somethings she surveyed said they regretted the most? Not taking more time to be loving or focusing as much as they should have on their kids. “It’s quite illuminating that when you get to that age, the things you long for the most, the things that make you happiest are those close relationships with family and friends,” she said.
Read more of their reflections on relationships below. |

Even when we know people’s names, why do we go for days without using them? By using someone’s name, you help them feel seen and acknowledged — and that’s an act of kindness. According to kindness.org’s research in collaboration with the University of Oxford, doing a kind act increases happiness, well-being, trust and compassion. And it can have the same powerful effect on those who receive the act. Try it, and put a smile on both your faces. |
