Although the plastic waste problem seems enormous and you hear about it everywhere these days, even small changes you make really do add up to a lot of help. Because many plastics aren’t recycled now, the waste can build up fast. But it’s not as hard as it can seem to start chipping away at the plastic pollution problem.

You don’t have to immediately change everything. Just start small, wherever you can, and soon reducing your plastic use will seem easy.

For example, if you pick up breakfast on workday mornings and bring a small, folding bag instead of accepting the food in a plastic bag, that could add up to around 200 single-use plastic bags, which are not recyclable, that you’ve saved per year! If you bring a reusable coffee mug and have it filled, just a couple of days per week, that adds up to around 100 disposable coffee cups and plastic lids that you’ve prevented from going into landfills, or possibly oceans, every year.

See other simple ways to reduce your everyday plastic use – you can make a big difference with little changes.

And it can have the same powerful effect on those who receive the act. Try it, and put a smile on both your faces.

One study found that after a few days of seeing flowers every day, people reported feeling happier and less affected by stress and workday fatigue. They also reported more “feelings of compassion for others.”
