The Milwaukee Bucks community is mourning the tragic death of the team's head coach Adrian Griffin's two-year-old grandson.
According to a press release provided to TODAY.com by Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup, the toddler — whose name was Jayce D. Griffin — was found unresponsive by his father on the morning of July 22. Soon after, the boy was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital Emergency Department located in Urbana, Illinois.
“At this time, the death of Jayce Griffin appears to be from natural causes pending additional testing and final autopsy results,” the release read in part.
Northrup noted that preliminary results from an autopsy found no evidence of trauma or foul play.
NBC affiliate WTMJ-TV obtained a statement from the Bucks head coach regarding the death of his grandson.
“My grandson Jayce was very special to me and my family and his passing is an agonizing tragedy that will be felt forever,” the statement from Griffin reads. “I appreciate your respecting our family’s grief and privacy at this time.”
Jayce’s death is currently being investigated by the Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office. Additional information regarding his death will only be released by the office upon completion of the autopsy and death investigation.
